![]() Some of the finest homes available are being built in Meyerland. The price range of the homes is from $254,000 to nearly $800,000. While some of the homes are the original 1950s bungalows, others are new construction from homeowners who like Meyerland’s ease and convenience. Today there are over 2,300 homes in Meyerland and property values continue to increase. The name Meyerland has become synonymous with residential beauty, strong restrictions, and solid real estate value. New and younger families are moving in, many of whom are second-generation Meyerlanders who are returning to their childhood home. They see this as a community of friendly people, excellent schools, and convenient shopping. An active association dedicated to keeping property values high and a 24-hour security patrol are additional incentives for homebuyers. Meyerland is the concept of three generations of the Meyer family. Grandfather Joseph, who bought 6,000 acres in southwest Houston, owned a downtown hardware store. After his father’s death, son George took the 1,200 acres he inherited and created Meyerland with 2,700 lots and an 80-acre reserve for a shopping center. His brother Frank eventually created the Maplewood subdivision. The 1990s revival of Meyerland Plaza, at South Loop and Beechnut, brought 927,000 square feet of new shopping space to Meyerland. The plaza includes a variety of 50 shops and restaurants with several new stores set to open in spring 2005. Nestled in the crook of the South Loop, just south of Bellaire, the combined Meyerland / South Post Oak community boasts excellent accessibility, beautiful parks, and strong community leaders. Serious about maintaining the neighborhood’s integrity, the Meyerland Civic Improvement Association makes sure deed restrictions are enforced. The average yearly income in the Meyerland / South Post Oak area is nearly $100,000. One of Meyerland’s defining characteristics is its strong Jewish roots. By the early 1960s, the growing subdivision – which eventually attained 2,300 homes – was closely associated with Houston’s active Jewish community. Today, the neighborhood is served by three synagogues and the Jewish Community Center. HISD schools include Herod Elementary, 5628 Jason; Kolter Elementary, 9710 Runnymeade; Parker Elementary, 10626 Atwell; and Lovett Elementary, 8814 S. Rice Avenue. Johnston Middle School, 10410 Manhattan, and Bellaire High School, 5100 Maple, are in the feeder pattern for these students. Houston Public Library’s Meyer Branch at 5005 W. Bellfort, is nearby. |
